Welcome to Gluten Free Fortnight
About The Campaign

14-29 October 2023
Transforming Forth Valley Into a destination with great & safe gluten free food
It is estimated that 1 in 100 people worldwide have coeliac disease. A large proportion of people, although not coeliac, are sensitive to gluten and make the choice to exclude it from their diet.
That’s a lot of people who often worry about the food’s safety when going out. There are often also not enough food choices on the menu for them.
We aim to put Forth Valley on a map as a destination recognised for its commitment to offering safe gluten free food and drink experiences. We’re upskilling and promoting local businesses that are dedicated to serving safe and delicious gluten free food because everyone with coeliac disease should enjoy their experience when eating out without worrying.
During Gluten Free Fortnight these local businesses put on special gluten free menus, host events and we promote them and run a coeliac disease awareness campaign.
We ran our first region wide campaign in 2022 and it was a great success. This year, we will be bringing Gluten Free Fortnight to even more food outlets across the Stirling and Forth Valley region of Scotland.

WHAT IS GLUTEN & COELIAC DISEASE
What is Gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in the cereals wheat, rye and barley.
What is coeliac disease?
It is an autoimmune disease NOT an allergy.
When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their body’s immune system attacks their own tissues causing damage to the lining of the gut. This can be from as little as a bread crumb.
Once someone has been diagnosed, the only treatment is to avoid gluten for life.
It is estimated that 1 in 100 people worldwide have coeliac disease. A large proportion of people, although not coeliac, are sensitive to gluten and make the choice to exclude it from their diet.
